VAUXHALL is offering low cost air conditioning instead of a standard sunroof across LS, GLS and Sport versions of the Astra range as part of its 1997 model year changes. The system will cost between £350 to £400 depending on the model while fresh air fiends can have both air conditioning and a sunroof for £650.

The Astra becomes the first car in the class to add a first aid kit as standard. LS and GLS models take on a more upmarket look with standard alloy wheels and, for the first time, body coloured bumpers and mirrors. The Sport 1.6i 16v model gets eight-spoke alloys - formerly the preserve of its 2.0 litre companion. At the bottom of the ladder, the Merit moves into a better audio bracket with an improved radio/ cassette and six speakers in place of the former two.

All the Astra engines meet EC96 regulations ahead of their formal introduction while the 1.7TD diesel engine in the Merit has been quietened to meet the 74 dB (A) noise regulations. The LS five-door hatchback and estate receive the 1.4i 16v engine which has already debuted in the GLS. Other additions to the 1997 Astras include: leather steering wheel on the GLS, ABS as standard on the CDX 1.6i 16v, two tone horn and a new cloth trim on all CDX models and new insurance ratings on all models. The cars will go on sale at next month.
