FRANKFURT provided the backcloth for the international debut of the 156, Alfa Romeo's important new mid-range car. Supplies of the saloon designed to underpin the Italian marque's sporting tradition are expected to reach UK showrooms early next year.

Company officials claim the model will set fresh standards in road behaviour and driving pleasure while also embracing the comfort and elegance of a luxury saloon. Base version for Britain will be a Twin Spark 1.8-litre producing 144bhp and featuring variable valve timing. A 2.0-litre version will offer 155bhp and have twin counter-rotating balancer shafts for smoother running, and the top-line V6 24-valve model will offer 2.5 litres and190bhp, along with six-speed manual transmission. All versions will have high-ratio power steering and anti-lock braking.
