MPVs and four-wheel drive vehicles are taking an ever-increasing share of the fleet market, according to Godfrey Davis (Contract Hire). The leasing company says that fleet operators are taking a more liberal view when formulating choice lists and this, coupled with new launches such as the Land Rover Freelander and drivers' desire for something different, is giving such vehicles a much wider fleet presence.

It expects to gather momentum, particularly in the compact MPV sector. The Renault Megane Scenic, for instance, is already accounting for more than 60% of Godfrey Davis's Megane business and a third of all its MPV registrations. MPVs accounted for 4.7% of R-plate Godfrey Davis registrations between August and November, compared to 2% of N-plate and 2.6% of P-plate. Meanwhile, 4x4s took 2.7%, compared to 2.4% N-plate and 1.4% P-plate.

Director of marketing Nigel Underdown said: 'Companies are increasingly recognising that the MPV can be a legitimate fleet contender, performing as acceptably as the traditional five-door hatch or estate in terms of practicality, running costs and image. The MPV is no longer an oddball and should now be recognised as a very important stand-alone sector in the fleet market.'
