FLEET driver Steve Waddilove showed he was a safe bet on the road when he took first place in the annual Times-Lease Plan Company Car Driver of the Year awards. He beat off stiff competition from hundreds of entrants from companies throughout the country to win the competition.

At a special ceremony at Sedgebrooke Hall, near Northampton, he was named the best driver out of 12 finalists and took away the top prize of an all-expenses paid trip to the Italian Grand Prix and £500 spending money. Entrants had to take part in regional heats before the final dozen were chosen for day of tests at Silverstone race track, both on the road and in the classroom.

The competition, now in its fifth year, is aimed at promoting safer driving and reducing the number of accidents on British roads. Waddilove, national account manager for Merloni Dom Appliances, is based in Uxbridge, Middlesex, and drives 45,000 miles a year in his Volvo V40 estate.
