AUDI has unveiled range-topping 4.2-litre V8 quattro versions of its A6 saloon and Avant range. The 300bhp cars, which feature Tiptronic transmission, will go on sale in the spring, with pricing and specification to be confirmed nearer the launch.

Audi has confirmed, however, that the cars will be equipped with permanent four-wheel-drive and Electronic Stability Program as standard, along with front and side airbags, and sideguard head level airbags as an option.

The German manufacturer is also putting into production an allroad quattro in February 2000 based on the body of the A6 Avant. The car will feature three-stage, height-adjustable air suspension, and low gear transmission for rough terrain. The allroad quattro will be available with two engines from the A6 range - the 2.7-litre V6 biturbo petrol, and the 2.5 TDI V6 turbodiesel - but will be distinguishable from the Avant by reinforced front and rear bumpers, underbody protection, wider wheel arches and a new radiator grille.
