NEW car sales reached an all-time June high last month with 196,442 vehicles registered - 15.7% up on June 1998's 169,789 total.

The surprise boom took 1999 new car sales to 1,191,329 - 4.8% up on the first six months of last year, according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
