THE police have been given new powers to deal with a number of traffic offences through fixed penalties rather than through the courts.

The new law applies to offences such as overtaking on a pelican or zebra crossing, failing to fit a regulation registration plate to a vehicle and driving on the footway. Penalties range from a £20 fine to a £40 fine and three penalty points.
