MG Rover was expected to shut down its Longbridge plant on Tuesday for six days to clear a backlog of unsold cars.

The company said the stoppage was needed to allow dealers to sell cars already in stock, as figures show slowing sales across Europe, down 0.5% in the first 10 months of the year compared with 2002. The plant is expected to re-open on Monday.
