Hot on the heels of its UK relaunch, SsangYong has announced plans to build 20 new models over the next six years.

The South Korean manufacturer – currently known for value 4x4s and SUVs – is to plough almost £1.5 billion into developing the cars on five different platforms with five new engines.

The new cars are expected to be styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s world-famous Italdesign styling house, and should tackle the somewhat challenging looks of SsangYong’s past and present models.

The company’s new diesel hybrid technology – unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – will feature strongly.

SsangYong claims it will see CO2 emissions slashed and fuel efficiency improved by 30%.

“I have been able to see some of the new models and although I can’t reveal any details, I’m very excited about what’s coming,” said Paul Williams, managing director of British SsangYong distributors Koelliker UK.

“It’s unlikely that all 20 will be appropriate for the UK, but it will mean a wider and more attractive range with much greater choice for customers.

“There will be different body styles and engines including passenger cars that will enable us to compete strongly in new market sectors.”

The news is a continuation of SsangYong’s efforts to move away from its dependency on Mercedes-Benz, from whom it licences its engines and gearboxes.

The marque is increasingly developing its own powertrains as it tries to move into more mainstream cars.
