Cutting-edge technologies that aim to revolutionise the transport sector by reducing carbon emissions dominated this year’s Carbon Trust Innovation Awards.

In addition to a dedicated transport category, this year’s awards attracted entries with a strong transport focus in the power category, and the award for private sector deployment of innovative carbon-cutting technologies.

Winner of the transport award was Guildford-based biofuels company TMO renewables, which uses the bacteria found in compost heaps to make sustainable ethanol-based fuel from municipal waste and food by-products.

For private sector deployment of carbon cutting technologies, the winner was Commercial Group, which has reduced its carbon footprint by using a sustainable biodiesel fuel to reduce emissions.

It has developed a smart communication system which enables each vehicle to communicate to the pump the exact mix of fuel required.
