The London borough of Camden is planning to quicken the introduction of car clubs in its area.

It wants to encourage businesses and residents to have access to a vehicle “without the cost and carbon footprint of owning one”.

The council has struck a deal with car club operators meaning they will fund the full cost of building car club parking bays.

The council said that one car club vehicle can replace up to 20 privately owned cars.

There are already more than 4,000 car club members in Camden, many of whom are local businesses, using the 107 car club vehicles in the area.

Councillor Chris Knight, executive member for the environment, said: “Using pay-as-you-drive car clubs rather than owning a vehicle can bring big savings, as well as offering the green credentials of only driving when it's really necessary."
