A new management tool has been launched targeting grey fleet risk – one of the most difficult areas for a fleet manager to address.

“Allowing drivers to use their own vehicles does not get rid of the organisation’s duty of care responsibilities,” said Malcolm Noyle, managing director of Noyle Fleet Solutions and the man behind Niche Grey Fleet Care.

“This creates a huge logistical and financial challenge for employers who need to find the budget to pay for driving licence, MOT and insurance checks.

"Subsequently very few do let alone have data on the vehicle types and servicing information as well.”

The new free service allows fleet managers to carry out online vehicle, driver licence and insurance checks as well as verify MoT status and ensure grey fleet vehicles undergo an annual inspection.

Drivers are offered servicing, maintenance and parts at just above trade prices, as well as benefits such as vehicle collection and delivery and discounted tyres.

The online tool also provides mileage capture, which can help prevent overinflated mileage claims.

Fleets using the service must mandate that for their grey fleet drivers to be reimbursed their mileage rate they must join the scheme and have their vehicle serviced at least once a year.

It is expected the service will also be available as a white label offering through some lease companies.
