Fleets will welcome a Government initiative to tackle road works disruption faced on a daily basis by at-work drivers.

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan has approved the country’s first ever road works permit scheme in Kent, which gives the council more power to coordinate road works and take tough action when they overrun.

“Everyone understands that road works are necessary to keep essential infrastructure in good order,” explained Khan. “But this should not mean constant inconvenience to the travelling public. Local authorities and utility companies must up their game.”

The measures announced also include a new system of compulsory tests every five years for those working on the highway and a summit later this year hosted by the Department for Transport to discuss the issues further.
