Most fleet decision-makers have been wrestling with ways to reduce their fleet size or forced, through staff redundancies, to reallocate cars or terminate early.

Terry Melton, though, has been presented with a different challenge – managing a fleet that has been increasing by around 100 vehicles a year.

The Apollo Group fleet manager only joined the business in 2006, then overseeing a fleet of 420 vehicles.

Three-and-a-half years later and he is controlling 679 vehicles, of which 79 are vans (all Ford). Almost all the vehicles are classed as essential user.

“I didn’t foresee this level of growth in the fleet,” Melton says. “I’ve had to adapt quickly.”
