Volkswagen has announced details of three new low emission BlueMotion models, all of which go on sale in the UK early next year.

The Polo Bluemotion is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel engine developing 75bhp. A revised gearbox, regenerative braking and stop-start help it record a claimed 85.6mpg average and emit just 87g/km of CO2.

The Golf variant is powered by a 105bhp 1.6-litre diesel which used optimised aerodynamics, longer gearing, low rolling resistance tyres and stop start to record 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

The Passat adopts the same 1.6 TDI engine to return 64.2mpg and 114g/km of CO2.

All three will fall into the lowest 13% benefit-in-kind tax band for diesels, while the Polo and Golf will qualify for the 100% first year writing down allowances.
