West Yorkshire Police walked away with the headline Motorvate member of the year trophy at the Energy Saving Trust Fleet Hero awards last night (November 20).

Under-secretary of state for transport Norman Baker MP gave the welcoming address at the seventh Fleet Hero awards, commenting: “This is the third Fleet Hero awards I’ve presented at; one for each of the Transport secretaries since the coalition was formed!”

He praised the awards for “showcasing fleets driving down carbon emissions and saving money”, adding: “Creating growth and cutting carbon – there’s no contradiction between these two. They can be delivered in parallel with a bit of common sense.”

The number of claims made for the Government’s plug-in grant in the first half of the year had exceeded those made in the whole of 2011, Baker said.

“I expect to see more good progress with new models coming to market. The future of transport is low carbon. Transport is part of our long-term prosperity and the way out of our economic difficulties is partly investing in green technologies.”

And he pointed to the role of fleets in adopted low carbon vehicles. “From a government point of view, getting fleets involved is a good way to get the market moving. You are important in our future plans. The fleet sector is innovative and essential in supporting our efforts to reduce carbon.”
