Santander UK’s car schemes have won the award for ‘Most effective travel strategy for business and perk car drivers’ at the Employee Benefits Awards 2012.

The judges were looking for a successful strategy that has made company cars and car allowances highly effective as a benefit within an organisation. Applications were assessed to find the best thought-through strategy and objectives, displaying innovation and quantifiable, measurable results.

The judging panel was made up of twenty nine HR and benefits experts, from across a wide range of companies and industries.

Santander runs two car schemes alongside each other, the Santander UK Essential Business User Car Scheme, available to 750 eligible UK employees throughout the Santander group and the Santander UK All Employee Car Scheme, which is open to the wider Santander UK employee base.

The schemes were launched in 2011 by Zenith and bring Santander’s company car policies together, across all Santander UK businesses.

Following the growth of the group and acquisitions, including that of Abbey, Alliance & Leicester, Bradford & Bingley and GE Money, there was the need to consolidate and harmonize Santander’s reward strategy and provide a benefit that would cater for all employees, not just business drivers.

The key aims of the schemes are to make Santander a more rewarding place to work, provide a cost effective and competitive ‘all employee benefit’, promote their ‘Go Green’ strategy, improve driver safety and increase the competitiveness of the overall reward package; helping Santander to attract the best recruits within the market.

In naming Santander as the winner, the judges commented that they were impressed by Santander’s environmental focus, CO2 savings, inclusivity and great branding.

Tom Manahan, fleet manager at Santander, said: “We have worked hard with Zenith to provide a first class employee benefit, that caters both for essential business car users and which is available across the Santander UK employee base.

“We are proud that our efforts have been recognised through this fantastic award. Both car schemes have low emissions, helping to promote the Santander ‘Go Green’ strategy.

“We are able to offer our essential business users a wide choice of low emission cars and our all employee base a fantastic cost effective salary sacrifice benefit, at no cost to the business.”
