Mercedes-Benz has published the first details of the new GLA-Class, a compact SUV to be shown in public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The fourth of a total of five new compact models from Mercedes-Benz, the GLA-Class joins the new A-Class, B-Class and CLA-Class boosting its chances of stealing sales from other brands.
Measuring five inches longer than the A-Class and less than two inches taller, the GLA-Class will initially be available with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, as well as optional all-wheel drive.
The 136bhp GLA 200 CDI is expected to offer CO2 emissions from 114g/km and fuel consumption of 65.7mpg on the combined cycle, while the 211bhp GLA 250 is capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds.
All the engines feature the Eco start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission (standard for GLA 250, GLA 220 CDI and the 4Matic models).
The rear seat backrests can be folded down completely, and are also adjustable for angle if required. The luggage compartment (421 – 836 litres up to window height)has a low sill wide tailgate, which can be specified with automatic opening and closing.
Mercedes-Benz set out to ensure the GLA has class-leading aerodynamics for an SUV and achieved a Cd of 0.29.
Lower than most SUVs, the GLA has car-like suspension, while models with 4Matic are equipped with DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) and an off-road transmission mode as standard.
Standard-fit features for the GLA-Class include Attention Aassist drowsiness detection and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to protect against collisions from a speed of 4mph.
This feature combines with Distronic Plus (optional extra) to become Collision Prevention Assist Plus. This incorporates an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 18 mph, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 12 mph.
Established assistance systems, such as the optional Lane Tracking package with Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist or Adaptive Highbeam Assist, are also available for the GLA. Active Parking Assist (optional) allows automatic parking in parallel and end-on parking spaces.
Full specifications and prices will be revealed closer to the car's launch, with orders being taken in November for 2014 delivery.

Looks quite smart, spacious and stylish both interior and exterior. Much approved design compared to it's predecessor.
