Trade associations and campaign bodies are calling on George Osborne to continue to freeze, or even cut, fuel duty.
Campaign group FairFuel UK has released its manifesto calling for a fuel duty cut, a view echoed by the Road Haulage Association.
“Road haulage is a key service industry to the UK economy and relies almost entirely on diesel, yet diesel duty remains by far the highest in the EU,” said the new RHA Chief Executive, Richard Burnett. “If we are to gain a competitive edge over our European counterparts we have to see a 3ppl fuel duty cut.
'Time is up for the Treasury to stop fleecing 70% of the electorate from punitively taxing an essential - no choice but to use - resource. Instead of taking more than 60% every time we fill up at the pumps they should be motivating the economy by cutting this taxation and putting more of the proceeds back into roads and public transport", said Howard Cox, founder of the FairFuel UK campaign.
Brian Madderson, chairman of the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) has written to George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, asking him to reaffirm his promise to freeze fuel duty until May 2015.
Madderson explained: “As global crude oil prices and the UK pound continue to fall, the threat of the Government reverting to the fair fuel stabiliser is a growing concern for businesses and the public.”
