Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Junior, a compact electric SUV that is due to go on sale this summer.

It marks a return to the compact segments for Alfa Romeo, following the removal of its Mito and Giulietta hatchbacks a few years ago.

The Junior is the first electric Alfa Romeo, too. It's offered with a choice of two power outputs and a 54kWh battery.

Entry-level models, known as 'Elettrica' have 156PS and a range of up to 250 miles. A more powerful Veloce model, with 240PS, will also be available.

The Junior shares a platform with the Fiat 600e and Jeep Avenger. Like those cars, a petrol-hybrid engine will also be offered alongside the fully electric models.

Alfa Romeo says the Junior was developed to offer "class leading" driving dynamics. The performance-focused Veloce version benefits from quicker steering and lowered sports suspension as well as larger brakes and a limited slip differential.

The car's distinctive exterior styling houses a sporty, driver centric cabin. The central infotainment touchscreen measures 10.25 inches and uses the brand's latest operating system.

There's a 400-litre boot, to aid practicality and an array of driver assistance technologies.

Pricing will be confirmed in the summer, when the car is available to order.
