Three London streets have each generated more than £1 million per year in parking fines, according to new research.
Data from AppyParking+ shows that tickets issued in Mare Street, Clapham Park Road and Millenium Way all generated more than £2m in revenue over a two-year period.
Dan Hubert, CEO and co-founder of AppyParking+, said: “Parking has become an increasingly stressful and complicated process for drivers – not knowing where is best for them to park, how long they can stay for, and also being charged significant fees for the privilege to park. This has become a significant problem for drivers in London, with certain areas racking up millions of pounds in fines each year, all at the expense of residents and visitors to the capital.”
The average parking fine currently costs drivers around £70 depending on the location, meaning misunderstanding or misinterpreting parking restrictions could result in a significant bill for drivers in the capital.
Mare Street, located in Hackney, as London’s most fined street for parking, receiving more than 32,000 PCNs and £2.3million in estimated revenue in the two-year period surveyed.
On average this sees London’s most-fined street receiving up to 44 fines per day, making it one of the UK’s most fined and costliest streets for parking, receiving the most fines of any council and borough surveyed.
The research also highlighted Lambeth not only as the home of one of London’s most fined streets, but also the most fined borough in the capital on average receiving more than 105,000 PCNs for its top five most fined streets, followed by Enfield and Ealing, racking up between 15,000 and 25,000 fines respectively.
AppyParking+ helps drivers save money by finding cheaper parking and also avoid fines by clarifying restrictions on streets.
Hubert added: “We are all looking for ways to save vital pennies amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, and parking is one area where millions are getting wasted due to a lack of clarity and understanding of restrictions. It is also an issue of wasting time and fuel whilst searching for somewhere they know they can legally park – meaning more emissions and more pollution of our streets all because we don’t know where is right to park. We wanted to highlight this problem, and create a positive conversation about how we can make parking a less stressful experience for all.”
