Dover District Council and Veolia reduce carbon emissions
A decrease of 7.5% in carbon emissions has been achieved in Dover as part of the new environmental services contract with Veolia and Folkestone & Hythe and Dover.
The carbon footprint of electricity, gas and fuel consumed by Dover’s recycling, waste and street cleansing operations has dropped by 7.5% when comparing 2022 to 2020. Specifically, consumption was reduced by 10.5% for electricity, 10.2% for gas and 7.5% for fuel.
Since Veolia was awarded an eight-year contract in January 2021, it has launched a new green fleet of vehicles and electric sweepers, and redesigned collection routes to minimise travel times.
Other measures include smart LED lighting, vehicles with new electric bin lifts and an anti-idling campaign.
David Fitzgerald, general manager – of municipal Southeast at Veolia, said: “These positive results demonstrate Veolia’s commitment to supporting our partner Dover District Council in achieving net zero carbon emissions.
“The carbon footprint reduction will have a positive impact on the environment as well as local communities and we will continue to invest in methods and technologies that create a better and more sustainable future for all.”
Kwik Fit to enter bicycle sector through partnership
Kwik Fit is set to enter the bicycle sector through a strategic partnership with Fettle.
Over the past three years, Fettle has built an expanding repair network, providing repairs and servicing across London.
Under the new collaboration, Fettle at Kwik Fit operations will be initially opened in three Kwik Fit centres in London and Bristol in the coming weeks, with the plan to roll out the partnership to centres across the UK.
The aim is to support bike owners, but especially to serve the growing number of e-bikes and e-cargo bikes.
Mark Slade, managing director (MD) of Kwik Fit, said: “By partnering with Fettle, we can offer its services and the expertise of its dedicated teams at Kwik Fit locations.
“Bikes are becoming more complex, and as well as the demand from fleet operators, the fact that many cyclists now buy through online channels means there is a requirement for the type of servicing and repair aftermarket that we are well used to in the automotive sector.
“Fettle has learnt a great deal over the last three years on the processes and skills required to tackle these trends, and a partnership between the businesses is a unique way to address this demand."
