Mazda is gauging feedback on its Koeru concept before deciding whether to add a new performance-focused SUV to its car line-up.
The compact CX-3 was launched earlier this year, and medium-sized CX-5 was refreshed around the same time.
The Koeru concept has similar dimensions to the CX-5, so a production version could capitalise on the efficiency benefits of remaining compact, while attracting customers seeking a more emotive design than the current car.
The Koeru concept car was configured as a five seater.
Other manufacturers have been exploring the idea coupé crossovers, including BMW with the X6 and X4, Mercedes-Benz with the GLE Coupé and Land Rover with the Range Rover Evoque Coupé.
There were also a number of concept cars at Frankfurt that followed a similar template, including the Nissan Gripz, Toyota C-HR concept and the Seat Leon Cross Sport.
