Honda has added a nine-speed automatic transmission option to the new Civic 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel model.

The new gearbox is capable of delivering official average fuel economy of 68.9mpg and CO2 emissions from 108g/km.

It is available on all trim grades and both four-door saloon and five-door hatchback models, costing £1,650.

This is the first time that a combination of a diesel engine and an automatic gearbox has been available on a Civic.

With a wide spread of gears, the nine-speed transmission provides a smooth and powerful launch, while a high top-gear ratio ensures low engine speed while cruising, which reduces fuel consumption and noise.

The Civic’s diesel engine produces 120PS and 300Nm of torque. Combined with the nine-speed automatic gearbox, it can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 11 seconds.

The Civic 1.6 litre i-DTEC Automatic is available to order now.
