BMW has revealed the Concept Touring Coupe to showcase what a hard top version of the current Z4 might look like.
The two-seat shooting brake is a far cry from the bulbous, indiscreet SUVs that BMW has launched in recent years. It’s svelte appearance harks back to BMW’s roots, drawing inspiration from the Z3 ‘clown shoe’ of the 90s.
“The BMW Concept Touring Coupe celebrates the original Sheer Driving Pleasure,” says Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW Design.
“A highly emotional vehicle like this shows that the passion for everything that goes into driving pleasure has been essential through the ages and will be for the future.”
It’s unlikely that a Z4 Coupe will be become a reality, though. BMW bosses have not given the project a green light and describe the Concept Touring Coupe as a “one off”.
Powering the coupe is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine, in another nod to BMW’s past. We’d expect drive to be sent to the rear wheels.
The interior is lifted from the existing Z4, suggesting the car is as close as it could ever get to series production, but wrapped in Italian leather for an extra luxurious feel.
The Concept Touring Coupe may not ever enter production, but the more fleet-relevant i5 – an electric 5 Series – will become a reality this year and is expected to be fully revealed soon.
