Mercedes has unveiled the first ever electric G Wagon, which is officially known as the G 580 with EQ Technology.
It's due to go on sale later this year, alongside the existing G-Class, offering significant off-road capability, performance and low benefit-in-kind tax.
The off-road icon retains its boxy shape and rugged ladder frame chassis, while integrating an advanced electric powertrain.
There's a 116kWh battery, which enables a range of almost 300 miles (WLTP). It is housed in a special casing to protect it when the vehicle is used off-road.
Each wheel is powered independently with its own electric motor and its own two-speed transmission. It enables the G 580 to offer true all-wheel-drive and a low-range gear reduction. The setup also means the car can perform a 360-degree spin on the spot, which makes manoeuvring in tight spots much easier.
Total power output is rated at 587PS and 1,164Nm - enough to shift the three-tonne vehicle from 0-62mph in less than five seconds.
Alongside its off-road capability, the electric G-Class offers a high level of luxury with a well-appointed interior and high specification.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but is expected to be well in excess of £100,000. However, with just 2% company car tax to pay, the G 580 might be the car of choice for top-level execs and business owners.
