Ford has unveiled the new Transit Connect, which will arrive in the UK this summer with the option of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.
The new Transit Connect is produced as part of Ford's ongoing partnership with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and is based on the existing VW Caddy.
Ford Pro offers the Transit Connect with short- or long-wheelbase options in two‑seat van or five‑seat Kombi bodystyles.
The panel van’s new load area design delivers an increased load volume of 3.1 cubic metres (L1) or 3.7 cubic metres (L2) depending on wheelbase choice. Maximum payload is 820Kg and the towing capacity is 1,500Kg.
In the Kombi, a new flexible seating concept enables dual-use customers to switch their vehicle from a five-seater to a work van. The rear seat folds forward and upward, to increase the load volume to 2.5 cubic metres (L1) or 3.1 cubic metres (L2)
The Transit Connect PHEV uses a VW-derived 1.5-litre petrol engine, combined with an electric motor and battery. Maximum power output is 150PS and the van has a zero-emission range of 68 miles. DC fast charging at 50kW is possible. PHEV models have a maximium payload of 770Kg.
Ford also offers the Transit Connect with a diesel powertrain. The 2.0-litre unit can be specified with 102PS or 122PS and is cabable of achieving almost 60mpg.
A 10-inch digital instrument cluster is standard across the range and is combined with a 10‑inch colour central touchscreen with available Connected Navigation.
Drivers who use a work phone for navigation or to contact customers benefit from wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto mirroring, with wireless device charging on Limited and Active trim levels.. Charging larger equipment such as laptops or tools is possible via 45-watt USB-C ports in the cab.
Offered in combination with a heated steering wheel, customers can also select optional heated front seats. These feature four-way electric lumbar and adjustable extended leg supports for improved driver comfort.
The range of driver assistance systems includes Pre-Collision Assist with Auto Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning, Evasive Steer Assist, and Intersection Assist to help prevent or mitigate collisions with other road users. A rear-view camera and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on high-series models.
The Transit Connect enters production in spring 2024, with initial deliveries of the diesel van scheduled for summer this year as part of a phased launch plan. Transit Connect PHEV will join the range before the end of the year, with Kombi models completing the line-up in early 2025.
