Peugeot has upgraded the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain available in its 308 and 408 models.

Based on the unit used in the new 3008 and 5008, the 308 and 408 PHEVs are now more efficient and provide longer zero-emission ranges.

It combines a new version of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 125PS electric motor, mated to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. For the 408, this results in a combined 225PS and 360Nm of torque. For the 308 & 308 SW, the resulting output is a combined 195PS and 360Nm of torque. The new plug-in hybrid powertrain gives both models CO2 emissions as low as 18g/km; up to 13g/km less than the outgoing version.

A larger 17.2kWh battery, with a useable capacity of 14.6kWh, is fitted with a 3.7kW onboard charger. A 0-100% charge takes 4 hours and 20 minutes, reducing to just over two hours with the optional 7.4kW onboard charger.

The 408 has a zero-emission range of 48 miles and the 308 has a zero-emission range of 49 miles. Both models now sit in the 9% benefit-in-kind tax band for the 2025/26 tax year.

Prices start at £38,110 for the new 308 PHEV, in Allure trim. The 308 SW PHEV costs from £39,310.

The new 408 PHEV is priced from £41,500. Both cars are offered in Allure of GT trim levels.
