Chinese car brands Omoda and Jaecoo will launch new models featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain known as 'Super Hybrid System'.
The Jaecoo 7 SHS, formerly known as the Jaecoo 7 PHEV, will be the first car to launch in the UK that uses the system.
The Super Hybrid System combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a hybrid transmission and an 18.3kWh battery.
In the Jaecoo 7, the powertrain enables a zero emission range of up to 56 miles and combined fuel consumption of 403mpg. It has a combined power output of 352PS.
Unlike typical PHEV systems, Jaecoo said the SHS ensures the electric battery remains charged and never drops to 0%.
Peter Matkin, chief engineer, Jaecoo, and head of engineering for Chery Group, said: “The rapid growth of new energy vehicles is set to continue, and plug-in hybrids are a key part of this expansion around the world. The SHS enables an improved driving experience and better fuel economy, helped by a unique engineering solution. Jaecoo engineers have worked tirelessly to fine-tune Chery ’s CDM hybrid technology to offer a truly viable alternative to a pure electric vehicle.”
In November 2024, prices were announced for the Jaecoo 7, a premium SUV that will come with a choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid (SHS) powertrains, priced from £29,435 and £35,065 respectively.
Future Omoda and Jaecoo models to feature the SHS drivetrain will be announced in the coming months.
