Ryder apprentice technician Jay Ahmed has been named as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year at the Semta Skill Awards.

Ahmed (pictured) will be competing against entrants from a range of engineering companies, such as Rolls-Royce and Mazak UK.

He joined Ryder’s apprenticeship programme in 2013 at Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire, and graduated in 2016. The Milton Keynes technician is in his fourth year at Ryder, and is undertaking a HNC in Automotive Engineering, which he is due to complete this year.

In 2017, Ahmed was a finalist in the Engineering and Manufacturing category of the Asian Apprenticeship Awards.

Semta’s chief executive Ann Watson said: "British engineering has had a glorious past and will enjoy an even more glorious future.

"Our industry judges have selected the brightest stars in the engineering firmament, many of them brilliant young apprentices and SME companies that will play a leading role ensuring that the sector and the economy thrive.

"Our future is in their hands."

Ryder’s HR director Catherine Steel said: “We’re delighted that Jay’s and Ryder’s efforts have been acknowledged by such an important body as Semta.

"Win or lose, it can only be good for Jay, Ryder, and the road transport sector as a whole to be seen competing alongside the best engineering businesses in the UK.”
