Renault has updated the Austral mid-size SUV with styling, drivetrain and interior improvements.

The facelifted model promises enhanced refinement thanks to improved sound proofing, redesigned seats and updates to its powertrain.

It also adopts a new look that aligns it more closely with the Rafale coupe.

A single powertrain is offiered: Renault's E-Tech hybrid. The system pairs a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a small electric motor. Renault claims 60.1mpg is possible, along with CO2 emissions of 106g/km.

New software has been installed on the car's clutchless automatic multi-mode dogbox, which manages the transition between engine and electric power. The updated transmission is is more responsive, eliminating flat-spots on kick-down or acceleration, according to Renault.

Driveability is further enhanced by new shock absorbers with improved damping, along with a move to larger tyres.

The Austral has a spacious interior with a 60:40 split folding rear seat that can also slide to improve leg room or boot space. Load capacity is 527 litres or 1,736 litres with the rear seat folded.

For the new Austral, Renault has revised the seat design to offer greater support. There is also new upholstery made from 98% recycled materials.

Acoustic insulation has been improved with new door seals, a new design for the rear-view mirror base to reduce wind noise and, on the Esprit Alpine version, laminated glass for the front doors.

Under the bonnet, more effective soundproofing and new powertrain mounts have been fitted for a quieter ride. 

As before, the Austral provides infotainment via two large screens and utilises a Google-based operating system.

Pricing and specifications for the new Austral are yet to be confirmed.
