Tarmac has achieved improvements in safety, sustainability and operational efficiency across its nationwide fleet operations thanks to greater use of technology.

Employing an integrated solution, which combines Geotab's telematics platform with Motormax's multi-camera recording system, has helped Tarmac achieve a 30% improvement in fuel economy and a 25% reduction in speeding violations within the first three months of implementation.

The system's real-time monitoring capabilities have enhanced driver safety by providing immediate feedback on driver behaviours.

Additionally, risk benchmarking offers evaluations of driver performance, enabling targeted coaching and fostering a culture of safety across the fleet.

The new fleet management platform manages more than 2,000 vehicles, including trucks, vans, pick-ups, and plant equipment across 13 UK regions.

“The key benefit of our collaborative project with Geotab and Motormax has been to support our 'Work Safe, Home Safe' philosophy, getting our drivers back home every day,” explained Jonathan Meddings, fleet risk and compliance manager at Tarmac.

Aaron Jarvis, associate vice president at Geotab, said that from day one its goal was to deliver more than just data.

“We wanted to provide actionable insights that drive behavioural change and operational improvement,” continued Jarvis.

“Seeing measurable results in fuel efficiency, idling reduction and driver safety within such a short timeframe proves the power of an integrated, connected fleet ecosystem.”

The Geotab installation team fit a total of 1,849 GO9 telematics devices into Tarmac’s vehicles and plant equipment across the length and breadth of the UK, as well as making 312 OEM connections with existing OEM telematics systems, including Cat, Vogel, JCB and Volvo.

Through the MyGeotab platform, fleet managers now have a single point of access to integrated camera footage, driver safety scorecards, preventative maintenance scheduling, and real-time vehicle data as well as deriving key insights from plant assets across the estate.

Tarmac says that the Geotab platform's driver ID system has also improved accountability and compliance, while integrated video telematics from Motormax enables targeted driver training and coaching.

Looking ahead, Tarmac plans to leverage Geotab's electric vehicle suitability assessment (EVSA) to support its EV100 pledge of transitioning to an all-electric fleet by 2030.
