Wincanton has retained the Carbon Trust standard, which it has held since 2010.
The latest award remains valid until March 2018.
In order to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, entrants must record a carbon management performance minimum score of 60%. In this most recent certification cycle, Wincanton surpassed this and recorded a performance score of 87% with a 1.4% absolute emissions reduction. Wincanton also achieved the highest emissions intensity reduction of 6.1% compared with the next best organisation in the sector which recorded 2.3%.
The Carbon Trust standard is awarded to companies that can demonstrate and maintain reductions in carbon footprint. The Carbon Trust standard certification is a rigorous process which included a review of Wincanton’s carbon emission performance data from the last four years as well as the completion of an extensive, evidenced qualitative assessment. In addition, the process also involved site visits by the Carbon Trust to five Wincanton operations.
The largest contributor of carbon from Wincanton's operations is related to transport fleet fuel consumption. The company closely monitors and constantly drives efficiency in the activities that are the most significant for its carbon impact across the business. Beyond the company’s core transport fleet, strong procedures are in place to minimise emissions where possible such as a number of low-carbon vehicles in the car fleet and increased collaboration with customers at the site level. In addition, Wincanton procures 100% green electricity in the UK.
Marcos Hart, business optimisation and transformation director, Wincanton said: “To be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard once again and to be recognised for our initiatives is a fantastic achievement for Wincanton. We take our sustainability and environmental impact responsibilities seriously and the findings from the Carbon Trust have proven our efforts to be significantly worthwhile. As an organisation we remain dedicated to working closely with our customers to reduce our carbon footprint and improving our existing operations.”
According to the findings of the Carbon Trust Standard certification report, “Wincanton has done an excellent job of integrating low-carbon initiatives and communication into the design and delivery of its services. While the driver is, again, primarily cost reductions, environmental and low-carbon concerns do play a prominent role in the company’s communication to potential clients and submissions to formal tendering processes. Reducing fuel and energy consumption, and in turn, carbon emissions, has become an integral part of Wincanton’s value proposition and was witnessed throughout site visits.”
