BMW Group has completed a pilot project in collaboration with Iveco to test LNG-powered trucks for its logistics operations, using a Stralis NP vehicle designed for long-haul transport.
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) can reduce the environmental impact of a logistics operation with no compromise on efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Iveco has is the only manufacturer that offers a full range of Natural Power models and the only true natural gas long haulage truck, the Stralis NP.
The test showed the Stralis NP 400 truck can complete a 330-mile round trip between Steyr and Regensburg on just one tank of gas.
Dr Thomas Irrenhauser, who supervised the pilot operation on behalf of BMW as part of its "Innovation and Industry 4.0" project, sees LNG as a "reasonable, sustainable alternative to conventional diesel" in the long term. In direct comparison, emissions of nitrogen oxide are up to 60% lower, and noise levels during operation are up to 50% lower.
“We are very proud that BMW has taken in Iveco’s vision of the future of the sector, with natural gas being the next step towards sustainability. We are seeing a fast growing number of international manufacturers and logistics operators opting for LNG for their transport requirements. Many are choosing Iveco to convert their fleets to LNG, in view of the experience we have developed over the last 20 years,” said Pierre Lahutte, Iveco brand president.
The logistics sector is increasingly looking at natural gas as a solution to reduce its environmental footprint and comply with ever-more stringent emissions regulations, while efficiently managing its resources.
It can deliver 20% to 40% savings in fuel costs, up to a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared to diesel.

this is not the first LNG powered vehicle to cover this distance. in 1998/99 I drove a LNG powered ERF to cologne and back on one tank of gas each way. that is 657Kms each way, the return trip was driven mostly by a motoring correspondent from Commercial Motor who was not use to the vehicle. I like the new found believe in gas power being the answer to alternative power for transport, but if it hadn't been for the greed of the fuel companies and the EU we would now be looking at Hydrogen power for trucks
