Edinburgh Leisure has reduced fleet overheads by 30% after implementing Airmax Remote’s Premium telematics product.

The organisation, which manages a number of sporting venues and develops sport and leisure services on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council, had the technology, which can analyse the time each driver has spent behind the wheel as well as locate them, fitted to its 24 vans.

In the six months since it started using the technology, Edinburgh Leisure has seen a significant reduction in the number of vehicles idling and being driven out of hours.

Gordon Forsyth, health and safety manager at Edinburgh Leisure, said: “The technology has helped us reduce our fleet overheads by nearly 30%, which is unprecedented, particularly considering that these results were achieved over six months.

“Identifying idling vehicles, as well as vehicles driven out of hours, has been a significant contributing factor in creating those savings.”

The ability of telematics technology to improve safety should not be overlooked, Dr Lisa Dorn, associated professor of driver behaviour at Cranfield University, told Fleet News in a recent interview.

The data the technology can record and monitor can be key to identifying poor driver behaviour.

This can then be improved through a variety of methods, such as targeted training or by incentives.
