Volkswagen has set a new range record for the ID 7 after driving 587 miles on a single charge.

The previous record stood at 493 miles, achieved on public roads in Zurich, Swizerland.

The latest record was set at the Nardò test track, in Northern Italy.

A Volkswagen ID 7 Pro S was used for the test, which has a WLTP range of 440 miles. The test car did not undergo any form of technical modification for the test, but instead came from current production at the Emden electromobility plant.

The car was driven for 33 hours, at an average speed of 18mph. It achieved 6.75mi/kWh during the test.

Volkswagen said the aim of the experiment was to determine the maximum efficiency of the ID 7 Pro S and claims the average speed correlates to typical inner-city driving.

The drive took place in December with ambient temperatures of 15 degrees.
