A green London taxi fleet has signed up for a telematics-powered insurance scheme in an effort to reduce its prem- iums and prove it is environmentally friendly.

Greentomatocars, which operates a fleet of Toyota Priuses, has signed a fleet management deal with telematics company Westwood Automotive, which will see drivers’ ability monitored. The technology means greentomatocars is eligible for Pay How You Drive insurance through Westwood’s insurance partner, Lloyd Latchford, which offers rebates if driving performance improves and claims reduce.

Westwood’s system provides information on driver behaviour, fuel economy, emissions, vehicle location and speed. Pay How You Drive uses this information to assess a driver’s strengths and weaknesses, which along with a psychometric assessment determines their risk.

Westwood Automotive director Michael Nuttall said: “This way they can not only demonstrate that their service is environmentally friendly – they can prove it.”
