Van fleet operators are being urged to carry out risk assessments on the use of hands-free mobile phones in their vehicles – and to consider banning them altogether.
The recommendation comes from training company Pivotal Performance, whose health and safety experts believe recent
high-profile road death cases could trigger a future change in the law.
Pivotal Performance’s Jane Gillham said: “Smart businesses should be weighing up the risks now and may decide to ban the use of all mobiles while driving. “
A good risk assessment doesn’t just look at what you have to do to stay within the law – it helps you protect your staff as much as you can without significantly interfering with day-to-day operations.”
