Hyundai UK has achieved significant growth with September sales increasing more year-on-year than any other major automotive manufacturer, according to official figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In a market that is down by 0.8% month-to-date, Hyundai increased sales by 37.1% in September compared to last year's figures.

The best-ever September sales month for Hyundai UK was in 2009 - a result of the scrappage scheme - with 11,031 vehicles sold. This record has been broken this month in 2011, with 11,562 vehicles sold.

The i10 city car was the best-selling model for September with 3,701 units sold, followed by the i30 and the i20.

Hyundai UK's managing director Tony Whitehorn said: "Hyundai has gained incredible momentum over the past three years, despite economic uncertainty.

"Scrappage enabled Hyundai in the UK to engage with new customers. More cars on the road has led to greater consumer awareness of our Company and our products, with sales more than doubling since 2008. September's figures, though, prove that this trend is continuing and with the addition of some exciting new models to the line-up this year, we are expecting this to be our best-ever sales year too."
