Tyre comparison data to help fleet managers choose more economical and safer tyres is now available for free from the Campaign for Better Tyres website.

The data, provided by the Dutch Government, includes information on the energy efficiency (rolling resistance), noise and safety (wet grip) of tyres currently on sale in Europe.

It has been organised into four lists – summer passenger car tyres, winter passenger car tyres, all season passenger car tyres and summer van tyres.

The lists have been translated into English and are available to download for free from the Campaign for Better Tyres website at http://www.bettertyres.org.uk/why-better-tyres/buying-better-tyres

The tyre tests were commissioned by the Dutch Government as part of a national campaign ahead of new EU tyre legislation due to be introduced in 2012.

The legislation will set stricter standards for tyres on energy efficiency, noise and safety.

Separate legislation, also due to be introduced in November 2012, will require all tyres to be labelled at point of sale with information on fuel efficiency, rolling noise and wet grip.

An EU impact assessment on the new legislation revealed that the most fuel efficient tyres currently on the market could reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as 10% compared to the worst performing tyres.

The best performing tyres can also cut tyre rolling noise in almost half and reduce stopping distances by 18 metres.

Carina Perkins, campaign manager, said: “From November 2012, new EU legislation will set stricter standards for tyres and make it easier for fleet managers to compare tyres.

“However, there are already tyres on the market which can help you cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, reduce noise and improve fleet safety.

“We hope that this data will help fleet managers compare some of the models currently available and choose better tyres to improve the economical, environmental and safety performance of their fleets.”
