Next week’s Virtual Smart Transport Conference will look at the UK's plan to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and switch to electric vehicles (EVs).
The event takes place on June 8-9 and is free to attend, with registration open now.
The Government is still currently planning a petrol and diesel ban in less than 10 years (it will be 2035 for plug-in hybrids), but Greg Archer, UK director at Transport and Environment (T&E), will take a closer look at the trajectory of the ban and the issues standing in the way of progress.
Archer said: “Ending the sale of every petrol and diesel car and van with an engine by 2035 is entirely feasible, but if it’s to happen, the Government needs to set automakers rising targets to increase sales of EVs over the next 15 years with penalties for not complying.
“The clock is ticking, there is no time to lose.”
Jason Simpson, Liberty Charge founder and board director, will present a session focussing specifically about the UK’s charging infrastructure requirements and challenges to achieve the shift to electric vehicles, and other forms of e-mobility.
Macquarie division director Anant Prakash will then present his view on how finance will play a vital role in successfully underpinning the 2030 ban and the electrification of all modes of road transport.

Following the presentations, all three speakers will be taking part in a live panel debate, giving delegates the chance to send questions their way.
There will be eight breakout sessions across the two days (including switching to electric) that will pick up on the decarbonisation and Covid-19 themes.
The topics are: addressing urban air quality; place-based solutions to decarbonise transport; switching to electric; achieving modal shift; decarbonising freight; transport outside cities; data and new mobility trends; and universal and inclusive transport.
