Review
SUVs have become the dominant bodystyle for new cars over the past decade or so, as drivers warmed to their higher seating position and practicality.
However, as the industry moves towards battery electric vehicles (BEVs), one of their shortcomings is becoming more important: their bulk is not conducive to maximising efficiency, something which is likely to take on greater importance as manufacturers look to eke out every mile from future BEVs.
Citroen’s answer to finding the right balance is its new e-C4 X – an aerodynamic fastback, but with a raised ride height and SUV styling such as black plastic cladding around the wheel arches.
Similar concepts such as the Polestar 2 have already been seen in other sectors, and C-segment rival Renault Arkana has a similar bodyshape, but this is not available as a BEV meaning the e-C4 X currently stands alone.
On paper, the approach certainly pays dividends. Just one powertrain is available in the UK and its 50kWh battery provides a WLTP combined range of up to 222 miles, giving the e-C4 X an impressive efficiency of 4.4 miles/kWh.
Its 100kW on-board DC charger means it can be charged from 20% to 80% capacity in 30 minutes, while it also has a 7kW on-board AC charger.
The e-C4 X also succeeds from a practicality point of view. At 4.6m long, it is about 25cm longer than its C4 and e-C4 hatchback siblings, enabling it to offer an extra 130 litres of boot space at 510 litres.
There is also plenty of room in cabin for all occupants, although headroom can be tight for tall passengers if the optional panoramic roof is fitted, while the interior design and dashboard will be familiar with anyone who has been in the C4 or e-C4.
This is not a bad thing as it is well designed and functional, with a nice mix of quality materials and textures.
The dashboard features a digital driver information display, as well as a 10-inch central touchscreen for most major infotainment controls. Climate controls are operated on separate buttons, which aids usability.
Citroen has focused on comfort in recent years and the e-C4 X is a great example of this, wafting along in a serene, cosseting and unflustered way.
Part of this is due to the use of the manufacturer’s advanced comfort suspension in which hydraulic cushions iron out any jolts when travelling on uneven road surfaces, as well the inclusion of extra padding in the seats for both front and rear passengers.
These ensure there is no sporty pretention or attempt to give it an unnecessarily dynamic character, and this is reflected in its acceleration.
The e-C4 X is fitted with a 138PS electric motor which provides ample performance. There is no being pinned to the seat back under acceleration, but the 0-62mph sprint can be covered in a handy 10.0 seconds.
Simply put, it’s just a really pleasant way to get from A to B.
Three trim levels – Sense, Shine and Shine Plus - are available with P11D prices starting at £31,940.
All models fall into the 2% benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax band, giving a 20% taxpayer a monthly company car tax of between £11 and £12. Citroen expects the range-topping Shine Plus will be the most popular choice.
Fleets are predicted to account for 60% of UK registrations and as a very likeable vehicle, the e-C4 X should be popular with company car drivers.
