Fleet FAQ

Q:

What is fleet management?

A:

Fleet decision-makers have a wide and increasingly complex set of responsibilities when it comes to fleet management – and rarely is one company the same as another.

Industry sector (public/private, utilities/pharma, construction/social housing to name just a handful of disparate categories), asset types (cars, vans, cars and vans, vans and trucks, cars, vans and trucks), company priorities (in/outsourcing, leasing/outright purchasing) mix and clash to mean that what’s good for one fleet is not necessarily good for another.

This is modern day fleet management.

And this is what the Fleet News website is all about: advice and insight, analysis of the major issues, sharing of outstanding business practices and great ideas, showcasing the latest vehicles and products.

The modern fleet decision-maker manages cost, operational efficiency, driver safety and environmental sustainability.

They will establish goals that will both measure and drive success while managing risk and reducing inefficiencies, including budget overruns and compliance issues.

New elements to the job are emerging all the time, including energy management with workplace charging infrastructure, driver wellbeing and data management.

The role has become far more strategic with planning based on the goals and future plans of the broader business.

They need to know how to influence and engage key stakeholders, learn new skills and adapt to a changing environment – and in all these instances, they are the ones leading the discussion.

Fleet managers are people managers and change managers; they consult on energy usage and funding options; they are supply chain managers and they are the juncture within a business where all departments – finance, HR, procurement, legal, operations – meet.
